Creating a new way of life
We are living in a very exciting
and powerful time. On the deepest level of consciousness, a radical spiritual
transformation is taking place. On a worldwide level, we are being challenged
to let go of our present way of life and create an entirely new one. We
are, in fact, in the process of releasing our old world and building a
new world in its place.
The change begins with each
individual, but as more and more individuals are being transformed, the
mass consciousness is increasingly affected, and the results will be manifested
in the world around us.
The Five Transformations
Every phenomenon demonstrates a unique, qualitative balance between yin and yang characteristics. To better understand the nature of life, the five transformations theory was introduced. It helps us to observe how yin and yang interact with each other within a system of cyclical change that parallels the seasons of the year.
Using this model, we see how we are in constantly changing cycle of floating, rising, radiating, descending, gathering, and the the cycle repeats. A healthy person experiences a variety of all five energies throughout the hours, days, seasons, and years of their lives. Each phase contains different characrteristics of yin and yang. These five transformations asssist us in our perception of the different qualitative aspects of yin and yang, as opposed to measuring only their quantitative values.
For example, summer and winter both manifest elements of yin and yang, but as a whole, the quality of their energies is very different.
The concept to embrace here is how the nature of the different energy transformations effect different people throughout the patterns of their daily lifes.
As we view the seasons with their characteristic
movements, we will discover which movements are lackin in a person's life
and which may be overemphazised.

Fire-like upward and outward energy represents
the flourishing and radiant inspiration of life. Summer excitement. Rising
tree energy creates the idea that sparks fire-like energy into full bloom.
Fires can burn with great excitement, and they always require fuel. Thus
stagnation i this phase might be expressed as hyperactivity, extreme mood
swings (flaming ups and "burnt out"), and a desire for stimulation from
others (fuel for the flame- e.g., laughter and applause).
A person manifesting balanced fire energy expresses themselves
as a consistent and peaceful charismatic source of light to which others
are charismatically attracted.
FALL/AUTUMN
METAL
LUNG AND LARGE INTESTINES
AUTUMN
The forces of Autumn create dryness in Heaven and metal on Earth; they create the lung organ and the kin upon the body...and the nose, and the white color, and the pungent flavor...the emotion grief, and the ability to make weeping sound.
Autumn Foods
To prepare foods which reflects the qualities
of autumn, we must be aware of its abundant yet contracting nature. This
awareness can be heightened by choices for more astringent as well as heartier
flavors and foods. In addition, cooking methods should involve more focused
preparation to supply the greater energy required by a cooler season.
The essence of food is received
through the sense of smell, which is related to the Metal Element and lungs.
The appetite is stimulated by the warm fragrance of baked and sautéed
food - concentrated foods and roots thicken the blood for cooler weather.
The fall is the time to organize
the open and perhaps scattered patterns of the previous warmer seasons.
To stimulate this activity in the body, to focus mentally, and to begin
the process of contraction, add more sour flavored foods. These include
sourdough bread, sauerkraut, olives, pickles, leeks, aduki beans, salt
plums, rose hip tea, vinegar, yogurt, lemons, limes, grapefruit, and the
sour varieties of apples, plums, and grapes. Be cautious with extremely
sour foods, because small amounts have a strong effect.
In general, cook with less
water, and at lower heat, for longer period of times. This internalizes
one's focus. Likewise, the bitter and salty flavors move energy strongly
inward and downward; ideally, they are gradually introduced as the fall
progresses into winter.
Dryness
When dry climates prevail, it is important to
know how to offset their effects. When a person has a dry
condition, it usually is related to the lungs,
and could have been caused by imbalances in the diet, excessive activity,
adverse climate, and/or organ malfunction. The major symptoms of dryness
in the body are thirst, dryness of the skin, nose, lips, and throat, and
itchiness; those who are chronically dry also tend to have a thin body
type.
To counter dry weather and
treat conditions of dryness in the body in any season, foods which moisten
can be emphasized: soybean products, including tofu, and tempeh, and soy
milk; spinach, barley, millet, pear, apple, persimmon, seaweeds,
black and white fungus, almond, pinenut, sesame seed, honey (cooked), barley
malt, rice syrup, eggs, clam, crab, oyster, mussel, herring, and pork Using
a little salt in cooking also moistens dryness.
Dairy and other animal products
are more appropriate for those whose dryness is accompanied by weakness,
frailty, and other signs of deficiency. The dry person's condition is frequently
a result of inadequate yin fluids in the body, and therefore many of the
remedies for nourishing the yin also treat dryness.. Those with dryness
should use bitter, aromatic, and/or warming foods with caution. These foods,
which include many spices and herbs, dry the body.
